Luminoso leverages Natural Language Understanding software to launch measure to improve business productivity with DENSO through the global application of knowledge

BOSTON, July 9, 2019 — Luminoso, the natural language company that provides AI-powered analysis of unstructured data, announced today that it is working with DENSO, the world’s second largest global manufacturer of automotive parts, in root cause analysis for upstream improvements in its application of knowledge bases at its production sites.

With over 130 production facilities around the world, vast quantities of knowledge are generated through daily production and improvement activities, but these valuable collections of knowledge are spread around the world in disparate formats and expressions, limiting their use to only sharing information within constrained search ranges. DENSO is initiating improvements in business productivity through sharing and application, beyond the borders between business units or countries, of various reusable knowledge base entries collected with AI technology.

“DENSO is committed to continuously refining the way we do business,” said Masahiro Saito, Director of Production Engineering Division at DENSO. “As part of this constant effort, we wanted to make our facilities more productive by utilizing the large amount of maintenance records that we have accumulated and finding latent causes that could lead to long-term suspension of the facilities. But common analytical approaches of natural language and unstructured data lacked the precision required, and we needed capabilities that understood meaning and context in Japanese and other languages. Luminoso’s natural language analysis software offers a feature-rich, high-quality solution that provides us with a comprehensive understanding of the issues surrounding the facilities by visualizing factors highly relevant to long-term suspension of the activities.”

Luminoso is working with DENSO to deploy a sharing system of knowledge accumulated within the company, allowing, for example, staff responsible for facility improvement to instantly view past notes and repair information across over one million documents to find information useful to creating a highly productive facility. Luminoso’s AI-powered application understands not just individual words, but also concepts found within DENSO’s maintenance notes. With no manual annotation or training requirements, Luminoso’s AI comprehends unique automotive parts and DENSO-specific terms, such as equipment names and engineering shorthand (eg. “RB” for “robot”).

“What impresses us most about Luminoso is the speed at which the company’s AI is able to understand our documents,” added Masahiro Saito. “There’s no need, in preparation, for manual tagging of terms or training and dictionary setups that you typically associate with machine learning — the software simply understands the information provided, and quickly identifies the maintenance notes needed to improve our engineers’ productivity.”

Moreover, the company plans to use Luminoso's text analysis solution to identify the root causes of facility breakdowns from decades of institutional knowledge inside DENSO to contribute to the development of nonstop facilities and identify those that require long hours for recovery through matching the vast Factory IoT data (for example: conditions of facilities or workers) and natural language data, as well as to derive insight into optimization of the frequency of scheduled facility maintenance.

About Luminoso

Luminoso builds text analytics products for analyzing conversational text data like support tickets, open-ended survey responses, and reviews. Using common-sense artificial intelligence to understand language, we empower organizations to discover, interpret, and act on what people are telling them. Requiring little setup, maintenance, or training, Luminoso combines world-leading natural language understanding technology with a vast knowledge base to learn words from context – like humans do – and instantly analyze text without libraries. Our products provide native support in 15 languages, so leaders can explore text data, make sense of feedback, and surface business-critical insights.
